|South Park character|
|Voiced by||Adrien Beard|
Eugene Token Black, formerly Williams, voiced by Adrien Beard, is a character on the animated series South Park.
Token Black is a regular member of Craig's Gang and is most notable as being the only black child in South Park (other than Shane Marks and guest characters). This might explain why the creators chose to change his surname, and also why his first name is Token. (In television and cinema, a "token black" is a black person amongst a crowd of white people to make the show seem diverse, ergo "token black".) His birthday is June 20th. He is one of the smarter boys and a straight-A student.
Token wears a light purple armani exchange shirt with a letter "T" in yellow and a pair of dark gray pants. Being African-American, his skin is dark. Also like the majority of African-Americans in the show, his parents are rich.
Originally known as Token Williams, he is the only minority (aside from Kevin) in the main characters' class and with the loss of Chef he and his family are the only African Americans in South Park. His name comes from the phrase "token minority," typically used to describe non-Caucasian persons thrown into small roles in TV shows and movies for the sole purpose of character diversity. In an intentional juxtaposition of racial stereotypes, Token and his parents are said to be the wealthiest family in South Park; his father (Steve) is a lawyer and his mother Marie is a chemist.
"Episodes in which he plays a major role often address ethnicity-related topics. In "Cartman's Silly Hate Crime Trey Parker and Matt Stone had originally taken turns providing their voices for the few lines Token had as a minor character. Token is now voiced by South Park art director and co-producer Adrien Beard. When trying to find a new voice actor for Token during production of "Cartman's Silly Hate Crime 2000", Parker said he recruited Beard "because he was the only black guy we had in our building at the time".[
(Best) Friendship with Shane MarksEdit
Shane Marks is the only other black kid in South Park besides Token. He is also one of the richest in South Park beside Token, and Jeffrey. After Token found out how rich Shane was, he got a little jelous, knowing how good he's got it besides him. Token later finds out that Shane is british, like Pip. They later became good friends and eventually sit next to each other in Mr. Garrison's class.
